Before you start

Por and para are two of the most-searched Spanish grammar topics for a reason: both can mean "for" in English, but they are used for very different ideas. A useful way to think about it is that para points forward, towards a goal, destination, deadline, or recipient, while por points to the cause, the route, the duration, or the exchange behind an action.

Use PARA for:

  • Este regalo es para ti. — This gift is for you. (recipient)
  • Salimos para Barcelona. — We leave for Barcelona. (destination)
  • La tarea es para mañana. — The homework is due for tomorrow. (deadline)
  • Estudio para el examen. — I am studying for the exam. (purpose)
  • Trabajo para una empresa grande. — I work for a big company. (employer)
  • Para un extranjero, habla muy bien. — For a foreigner, he speaks very well. (comparison)

Use POR for:

  • Gracias por el regalo. — Thanks for the gift. (reason)
  • Caminamos por el parque. — We walk through the park. (route)
  • Estuvimos en Madrid por tres días. — We were in Madrid for three days. (duration)
  • Pagué diez euros por el libro. — I paid ten euros for the book. (exchange)
  • Lo llamé por teléfono. — I called him by phone. (means)
  • No fui por estar enfermo. — I did not go because I was ill. (cause)

A quick test

If you can replace the word with "in order to", "to", or "for the purpose of", use para. If the meaning is "because of", "in exchange for", "during", or "through", use por. This test will not work in every case, but it solves most of the everyday ones.
